Michael Murray

Michael was admitted to the profession in 2012 and called to the Bar in 2024. Prior to coming to the Bar, Michael maintained an extensive family and civil law practice.

Michael has extensive experience in inquiries and inquests, having acted in a range of complex and high-profile inquests in Queensland for parties, witnesses, and other persons of interest.

Michael has lectured in International Law, Human Rights Law, and Clinical Legal Studies at James Cook University. He is regularly called upon to present and publish in Queensland and Australia on his areas of practice. He has been the President of the Townsville District Law Association and the North Queensland Law Association. In 2021, his work was recognised by the Queensland Law Society when he was awarded the Queensland Emerging Leader Award. In 2026, Michael was awarded a Life Membership of the North Queensland Law Association.

Michael serves as a Board Member of Centacare North Queensland, Townsville Community Law Inc., the North Queensland Law Association, and the Townsville District Law Association. He is a member of the Bar Association of Queensland’s Access to Justice Committee and Regional Issues Committee.

Areas of practice

Michael has a broad trial practice in both Federal & State jurisdictions. He regularly appears led and unled in superior courts. His primary areas of practice are:

  • Family law, domestic and family violence law and child protection law

  • Civil & commercial litigation (including personal injury law)

  • Coronial inquests & commissions of inqury
